My favourite Jewish saying about music is from Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi (1745-1812)
“If words are the pen of the mind then music is the quill of the soul”
Below I share some Jewish music that inspires me with a yearning to connect to that which is beyond self and to live with deep joy and sense of meaning and purpose
“It is a tree of life for those who hold fast to it, and those who uphold it are happy. Its ways are pleasant, and all of its paths peaceful. Return us to you, God, so that we shall return, renew our days as of old. These words I find so powerful and meaningful to my life. The notion that there is an objective truth and purpose that I can and must search is the very basis of Judaism. We define this truth as the Torah in which God reveals His will and purpose for his creation. Despite the inevitable sufferings that corporeal life brings, by fastening ourselves to the teachings, wisdom and ultimately the laws of the Torah we are able to navigate our souls to connect with Truth and deeper meaning and purpose. “A person with a why can withstand any how”. With Torah we are able to appreciate the interconnectedness of all reality. We can celebrate with true joy in knowing that our souls are connected to infinity that transcends our world and yet the wonderous wisdom of Torah enables us to bring heaven down to earth and begin to taste the world to come in the here and now!
