Cumbria has a lot of villages and towns with weird and wonderful names, that if you’re not from here could be quite difficult to pronounce

Being from Cumbria there’s nothing that makes your eyes roll more, or you cringe harder than someone pronouncing a Cumbrian place name wrong

Here are some of the most common places that topped the list and how to pronounce them properly.

Keswick

The ‘w’ in the middle of Keswick is actually silent but it’s surprising how many people pronounce it.

To avoid embarrassment the best way to pronounce it is Kez-ick.

For anyone not from here the name of this village is definitely going to trip you up.

You should pronounce it Tra-pen-na.

Brougham

It’s no surprise this place is mispronounced and unless someone tells you how to say it you’ll never guess/

It’s said Broom.

Burgh

Some people think you pronounce it ‘berg’ or ‘berr’ but the correct way to pronounce it is actually Bruff.

Aspatria

This is one place you’ll always hear people quickly correct someone if they pronounce it wrong and if you’ve ever travelled on the train when it’s said you’ll hear a load of groaning Cumbrians.

It’s pronounced A-spia-tria.

Greysouthern

This was somewhere, that even as a Cumbrian myself, tripped me up for a while.

But I quickly learned the best way to pronounce it is in fact Grey-soon.

Kirkby

As in Kirkby Stephen and Kirkby Lonsdale, the second ‘k’ is actually silent and it’s pronounced Kirby.

Beckermet

People feel the urge to put the stress on the ‘beck’ when this is in fact wrong.

It’s pronounced Beh-kermit.

Sandwith

This place name trips a lot of people up and it’s more simple than you think. It’s San-uth.

Frizington

Again Frizington has a silent letter, you don’t pronounce the ‘g’ in it and it becomes Frizinton.
