Hi Philip, Sorry for my late reply. You may have seen that we had a busy evening following the Purim service! Richard, Adam and I really enjoyed our time with you and would like to thank you for making us feel so welcome. It really was fascinating to be involved with the Purim service and we just wish we could have stayed longer for the party afterwards! As the Flyde coast was battling Storm Ciara, some very brave members braved the elements to attend our Tu B'Shvat celebration!                I love Tu B'Shvat, New Year for trees celebrated exactly at the half-way point between winter and spring. Indeed in Israel this is exactly the day (15th Shvat) the sap rises in the fruit trees in preparation for another year of growing and bounty. Tu B'Shvat ticks all the boxes you could possibly wish for in a Jewish festival! It is easy to prepare for - just select whichever ripe fruit takes your fancy from your local fruit store or supermarket - up to 15 types, can include nuts and the 7 special fruits of Eretz Yisroel. It is healthy and delicious - some fruits and berries have now entered 'super' status if you are into new nutritional research like me. It promotes mindfulness - another well-being biggie in our modern era - and my hubby explained how to properly meditate before/during and after eating...

Dates for Cholent Kiddunch: Shabbat 30th November Shabbat 21st December Shabbat 25th January Shabbat 22nd February Each shabbat before Rosh Chodesh is known as Shabat Mevorachin where we bless the new month praying for a month of spiritual and material blessings, and is often marked by a special kiddush. TRADITIONAL CHOLENT Serves 10-15 in a crock pot (half the recipe if desired) 2kg potatoes 4 onions 4 carrots (or courgettes/parsnips/celery) 2 bags cholent beans (or 2 tins baked beans or kidney/butter beans) ½ packet pearl barley large portion of cholent meat or cubed steak or chicken pieces (or can use 2 packets veggie sausages or equivalent to make it vegetarian) Method Slice onions, potatoes, veg. As always, the Ladies Guild went above and beyond, working tirelessly to prepare and serve a veritable feast ! With a slight move from tradition - the speeches were heard between the main course and desert, simply so the congregation wouldn't be too hungry to concentrate, but not too full to be sleepy ! First off, after a hilarious introduction by Robert Pinkus, the newly elected Chatan Bereishit, Spencer Berd, turned out to be a natural comedian as he ad libbed his way through an amusing heckled speech. Howard Lipman then gave another humorous introduction to the newly elected Chatan Torah, Michael Frankel, who regaled the congregation with, imitations and jokes before breaking into a fantastic Yiddish song. Then,  just when everyone prepared to tuck into the delicious deserts - Surprise ! Entertainment was supplied in the shape of The Alte Machers, namely Robert Pinkus, Michael Frankel and Spencer Berd, who suddenly (after unobtrusively leaving the hall) reappeared on the stage dressed as Flanagan and...

The weather was kind to the participants scattering their sins on Lake Windermere - it didn't rain and the wind stayed relatively calm. Some of the clouds obstinately refused to move, so the sun remained but a distant memory of warmer summer days. However, that didn't spoil the enjoyment and with huge thanks to Robert for steering St Anne's Shul congregants safely to their destination - everyone returned home, free of sin, and looked forward to next year. ...
