Paul Ehrlich (1854-1915): Scientist and Visionary by Peter Beyfus We have learnt a great deal about the COVID-19 virus since it impacted our lives in 2020; and the development of vaccines with breathtaking speed has impressed both the scientific fraternity and all of us who have little knowledge of the esoteric field of immunology. It seems appropriate now we are seeing a return to normal life,  having suffered the privations of social restrictions for so long, to pay tribute to Paul Ehrlich, one of the pioneers of immunology and a major contributor to other medical advancements, specifically haematology, cancer research and chemotherapy; it was Erhlich who coined the phrase “magic bullet”. 15th March - The Ides of March Ides simply referred to the first new moon of a given month, which usually fell between the 13th and 15th. In fact, the Ides of March once signified the new year, which meant celebrations and rejoicing.   Julius Caesar was assassinated in Rome on this date in 44 BCE. March 15 (the 75th day of the Roman calendar), famously marked as the “Ides of March” (a.k.a, the middle of March), was once best known as the date by which you had to settle your debts from the prior year (marking, as it did, the first full moon of the Roman new year). In 44 BC some serious debts were collected when a group of some 40 senators, including Marcus Junius Brutus (a.k.a, Quintus Caepio Brutus, a.k.a. “Et tu, Brute?”), assassinated Julius Caesar in the Roman Senate chambers. Moti Ashkenazi was known to the police in the 90s as an old Tel Aviv drug addict and beach thief. To pay for another dose of drugs, he stole wallets from the bags of swimmers on the beaches.
