A moving testimony by Judith Hayman, and an object lesson in the importance of education about the Holocaust. The truth about humanity is today’s friend can become tomorrow’s enemy; this was graphically illustrated by Judith with reference to how quickly Austrians accepted Nazism and turned on their Jewish neighbours. This decent into evil, witnessed again in recent times in Bosnia and Rwanda, can creep up on ordinary people who allow themselves to be seduced by false ideologies. It is essential, and this is where the splendid work of the Holocaust Memorial Trust comes in, to ensure the experiences of Holocaust survivors is not lost: the mantle must be passed on to the younger generation, who, sadly, after years of schooling, are poorly informed of the history of the Jewish people and the many other ethnic groups who have suffered at the hands of tyrants.
