On a warm sunny afternoon in August, the Fylde Group of the League of Jewish Women hired the Daniel Rose Hall to hold their Annual Summer Afternoon Tea.
The event attracted over 90 people, including many from Manchester branches of the League, who migrated all the way up the M6, to our lovely town by the sea. The event was catered on home territory by the Ladies Social Circle of the St. Annes Synagogue.
The ‘Surprise Mystery Guest Opener’ certainly surprised the gathered visitors – welcoming them to the event was Kila Redfern, the FIRST LADY TOWN CRIER OF LYTHAM.
Kila Refern swinging her bells and shouting her cry as she entered the crowded hall and made her way to the stage to proclaim the event open !
Kila delighted the guests by recounting how she became the First Lady and what her ceremonial duties consist of. That outfit was stunning – although with the temperature outside on the day, one had to feel thankful they weren’t wearing it 🙂
After a welcoming speech from Chairman Naomi Lefton, the assembled guests were treated to the beautiful violin playing of Elaine Green, BBC Concert Violinist while they devoured the huge afternoon tea on the groaning tables. She entertained with tunes from the musicals interspersed with some popular classical pieces. Altogether a joy to listen to.
The two table quizzes on each table taxed the minds of everyone there – but the Bentwood Table proved to be worthy winners of the table prize.
The guest speaker was Adam Knight, Chief Executive Office of The Grand Theatre in Blackpool.
He had everyone engrossed – one guest added at the end “I could have listened to that guy all day”
Indeed, his life story and his anecdotes were so encompassing, there wasn’t much left for the Q & A section – although naturally, some people still found questions !
The afternoon ended with what has become the St. Annes Famous Raffle – featuring as usual the most magnificent prizes, some so popular they were making second and third appearances as previous winners had generously rejected, errm so sorry that’s a typo, as previous winners had generously RE-DONATED them.
