77 years ago, the most famous act of armed Jewish resistance during the Holocaust occurred in the Warsaw ghetto. In the spring of 1943, 750 ghetto fighters fought the Nazis for nearly a month. As these images – scenes of Warsaw today contrasted with historical photos from the ghetto – show, what occurred 77 years ago, is strikingly present and real again. When the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising was defeated, more than 56,000 Jews were captured from the ghetto. 7,000 were shot. The remainder were deported to camps. Their bravery is not forgotten.
