Born in London of Ukrainian and Polish ancestry, Margaret Fingerhut has a distinguished career which has taken her all over the world. Described by Gramophone as a pianist of “consummate skill and thrilling conviction”, she is particularly known for her innovative recital programmes in which she explores the highways and byways of the piano repertoire. As a concerto soloist she has appeared with the London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the London Mozart Players, in major venues such as the Royal Festival Hall, Royal Albert Hall and the Barbican. She is often heard on BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM and many radio stations worldwide.
I wanted to let you know about a short video I am launching today in support of British-Ukrainian Aid. I have made it in collaboration with Viktoriia Levchenko, a young filmmaker from Ukraine.
The video is set to a stirring piano piece by the Ukrainian composer Sergei Bortkiewicz (1877-1952). Bortkiewicz wrote Les Rochers d’Outche-Coche in 1908, inspired by the mountain scenery in Crimea. The music conjures up the awe and majesty of the landscape, and Viktoriia has matched it with a series of extraordinary images, including powerful footage of the devastation caused by the war.

The devastation of the Ukraine wrought by Russian troops on the orders of Putin is unforgivable. It is imperative the West continues to support the valiant efforts of the people of the Ukraine to resist Russian aggression, and for all of us to contribute to charities that provide life-saving provisions for those whose homes have been destroyed and who are facing a bleak winter without heating.
