Walter Hubert, former scrap metal dealer, who was born in Germany and moved to England in 1939 to escape the holocaust, which tragically claimed 38 members of his family, has passed away.
He was nine-years-old when his family fled Nazi Germany and moved to Blackburn in 1939, and he became an avid Blackburn Rovers supporter after the Second World War, joining the board for the first time in 1960s, at a time when the club was the subject of a takeover bid.
“Around that time, there was a takeover bid for Blackburn by a guy called Derek Barnes,” recalls Hubert.
“I phoned up the Rovers and said you should co-opt some young men onto the board, so they interviewed me and I passed the test.
“There was then an Annual General Meeting in the town hall and for some reason I got enough votes.”
Hubert was the joint managing director of Tom Martin and Co Ltd, the Blackburn-based scrap metal business set-up by his father in 1948, and they later sold it for £20 million, in the 1970s.
Well known in Manchester for his philanthropy, and now, three decades later, Hubert lived in London and listed Roman Abramovich amongst his contacts.

Does anyone know if w hubert was ever a pow in 1946 in Scotland?
I’m so touched to read this sad news that Walter Hubert passed away in May. I tried to call him today for his birthday. My sincere condoleances to Sarah family and friends.
I am so sorry I was not able to speak to Walter Hubert anymore. I am writing from Schlüchtern, where Walter was born. Citizens here are trying to keep up the memories as much as possible of its former Jewish citizens. For instance, we have placed 18 memorial plates (Stolpersteine) in front of houses where Jews lived. I am now seeking contact with Sarah, Walters daughter, for further research on the family. Please pass these lines on to her, should you know her. I can be reached at EMail: clas.roehl@web.de
Thank you!
Just come across this page and wish to send my deepest sympathy to Sarah and family. All my best Herta Formby
